Smart bird feeder privacy and security
A camera feeder records what its lens sees at the feeder, and the clips go to the maker’s cloud; Harymor and Avinory can also keep them on a memory card at home. Aim it at the feeder, protect your Wi-Fi and account, and remove it from your account before you give it away.

What a feeder camera records
Motion at the feeder starts a photo or a short clip, and live view streams whenever you open the app. Everything in the frame is recorded: the feeder, but also the yard behind it, a window or a path. A tight frame on the perch keeps the recordings about birds.
Where the recordings go
Birdbuddy, Birdfy and FeatherSnap send recordings to their own cloud and keep them for a set time: Birdfy’s free plan keeps clips 30 days, FeatherSnap’s free photos expire after 3 days. Harymor and Avinory keep a rolling few days in the cloud and also record to a microSD card of up to 128 GB in the feeder, so clips can stay at home; neither maker says how long a card lasts before older clips are recorded over. Bird identification runs on the maker’s servers, not inside the camera.
Who else can see them
The account owner decides who else watches. Birdbuddy’s free plan shares photos and videos with up to 10 guests, and live view for guests needs the Family plan. Birdfy guests can watch live and see clips but cannot change settings or delete videos. Avinory says up to five family members can share a feeder. Remove a guest when they no longer need access.
Lock it down
Put the feeder on a Wi-Fi network with a strong password; most of these cameras support WPA2. Use a unique password for the camera app and turn on two-step sign-in if the app offers it. Install app and firmware updates when they arrive, and turn off location or microphone permissions on your phone that the app does not need.
Before you sell or give it away
Remove the camera from your account in the app and follow the maker’s reset steps, so the next owner starts fresh and your clips stay yours. Download any clips you want to keep first. What moves with the feeder differs by brand: Birdfy sells lifetime bird ID for the life of the camera it came with, Birdbuddy’s terms say a membership cannot be transferred to someone else, and FeatherSnap bills Premium per camera. Ask the maker before you hand it over.
