Bird feeder problems and how to fix them

Start with the symptom and change one thing at a time. Many problems begin with food, placement, access, power or a setting rather than needing new hardware.

What needs attention?

Start with the symptom. Most paths begin with an observation or maintenance check before a new purchase.

When seed is wet or the ground is messy

Discard wet or questionable seed, clean and dry the food compartment, then fix drainage or weather exposure. If rodents are visiting, pause refills while you remove spilled food and secure the stored seed.

When birds visit but the camera misses them

First separate a missing recording from a missing alert or bird name. Open the app and look for a recording of a visit you saw; a quiet notification feed does not prove that the camera missed it.

  1. Check the camera’s battery and online status in its app. If it is offline, recharge it using the exact model’s charging instructions, then try its live view near the router.
  2. If the camera connects near the router but fails at the feeder, test a closer outdoor spot. Compare the model’s Wi-Fi band and security requirements with your router in the Wi-Fi checker below.
  3. If live view works but visits are missing, inspect recording and notification settings separately. In Birdfy, motion sensitivity, the gap between recordings and notification filters can change what is captured or announced. Change one setting and observe another visit before changing the next.
  4. If a clip is present but its bird name is absent or wrong, use the bird-identification guide. Buying a new camera or a paid identification plan will not repair a failed connection.

Separate a quiet feeder from a camera problem

No bird visits and no camera captures are different observations. First check for spoiled food, local advisories, and whether birds can approach the feeder. If birds visit but captures are absent, check the camera’s power, settings, account and supported connection.

Do not use a visit count as a promise of activity or a failure rate. Keep a short observation log and test one change at a time so you can see what helped.

Use the exact model’s support instructions

App steps, pairing requirements and charging procedures vary by model and generation. Have the model and app version available when you contact support. Do not share a router password in a public post or with this site.

If the problem involves glass collisions, sick birds, a bear or another wildlife concern, use wildlife guidance before continuing the feeding experiment.
